VVOB has been working in Zambia for more than two decades. The choice to focus the Teacher Training Support Programme on improving quality of teacher education was inspired by the experience VVOB had in the educational sector and the needs indicated by the Ministry of Education. Important lessons were learned in previous MOE-VVOB projects that focused on:

  • Strengthening of the teaching methodology and CPD for lecturers in one of the Colleges of Education (that was later upgraded to a University College – Nkrumah College of Education);
  • Supporting the development and implementation of the Primary Teacher Diploma by Distance Learning at NISTCOL; and
  • Supporting the management and implementation of the School Programme of IN-service for the Term (SPRINT) and advocating for Community Schools.

The result areas that were defined for the first phase of the programme (2008-2010) are built on previous expertise and networks. As indicated in the evaluation study “The programme is smart, building on existing structures (colleges of education, resource centres…) as well as on VVOB’s prior experience in various educational projects” (Stoop Consulting, 2010, p.3).
